Warning: Rant
Jan. 24th, 2007 05:56 pmI was supposed to get the fecals done yesterday, if not for the fact that my coworker decided to call out. Period. She didn't say she was ill, just that she wasn't coming in. So I had to man the lab and do what blood work came in to do. No problem except for the need to be finished with Sentinels TODAY.
No problem. I came in early. 7:30-8:00ish. I didn't figure this would be a problem at all, so I collected up my filters, prepared a list of rooms for myself and one for the tech for when he began collecting the Sentinels, and I headed out. I knew it was going to take awhile.
I finished about 4 rooms by the time I saw the other techs heading in the same direction. It was, at that point, around 8:45ish. A conversation then persued thusly.
"Can you collected 322, Laura? It is pinworm positive and all of us techs have to go on our rounds."
"No. I have to finish collecting the rest of the fecals. I haven't even touched the 2nd floor yet."
"But we can't collect them. We have rounds."
"Well, why don't you call 'big tech boos' and ask if she can do them."
Conversations ends. I left to finish collecting my third floor fecals. They were on to the second floor by the time I was finished with my last room. Time for me to head down. I did so and began to collect the second floor. Once more we intersected.
"She doesn't know how to collect them. Can't you collect them?"
*rolls eyes and sighs* "Fine, but I've been doing this for about 2 hours now (it is at this point 10am and I still have another 3 rooms to do) so at least let me run downstairs and grab a bagel first."
Done and done. I finish my last few rooms, wash my hands, and I head downstairs to get a bagel. On the way, I run into big tech boss and ask her if we can't just leave 322 until we got Smith Hall. Fine. It was settled. Stupid me thinking I would be allowed a break. In anycase, there were a good 70 fecals waiting for me in my diagnostics room, so I headed back there only to be interrupted by the vet techs. They wanted me to process with them. And collect room 322. Personally, I wanted to do my fecals as I trust nobody to do them any more after all the other fiascos that have happened (will rant about that another day). They tell me my coworker will do the fecals into which I reply "Yeah right..." and throw on my PPE's so I can go process.
IN THE MIDDLE OF PROCESSING - the arrival of our Smith Hall Sentinels. You know what that means? I need to go collect 322. But no! They need me to process and I now have a shit ton of fecals and cecum/headcaps and I just KNOW my coworker merely put things on to soak and didn't actually DO any of the fecals. By this point in time I'm starting to twitch. Then it all hits me in perfect clarity.
Why are the vet techs unable to collect the pinworm positive mice in room 322 but they can process them!? Well, supposedly, if they do anything in necropsy, they change scrubs and all is well. But pinworm is pinworm.
"But in the room, the pinworm is in the air."
Wrong, bucko! We are dealing with Aspicularis, here. Not the floating kind. Yes. There are two kinds. So shoot me for being a geek.
Now, I understand that pinworm rooms should be gone into last when collecting so as not to contaminate the other rooms, but then why are the tech still allowed to process them as if they were normal mice and just change scrubs after? If they collect the pinworm positive rooms last, go in to process directly after (which is always normal), then why can't they change scrubs and then go on with their day? Are you trying to honestly tell me that there is a difference between collecting the mice and processing the mice!? You have to touch them in both instances! If it is in the air, it is in the air in both instances!
To translate: YOU DO NOT FUCKING MAKE LAURA DO ALL THE WORK BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO LAZY TO CHANGE YOUR FUCKING SCRUBS!!!
Laura is a very very angry person tonight. And very frustrated.
And after all of that, ALL of that, I went back to my room and sure enough, the fecals were not being done. They were sitting there while Ms. Coworker-Of-Mine sat on the phone with random people while surfing the web. That means that I didn't even start reading my nicely numbered 70 fecals until near 1pm. And people kept calling me while I did. And dropping off more fecals. And asking what fecals they still needed to drop off. And all of that had me forget which direction I was going on the slide so I had to start over again.
I had to try very very hard to fight back tears most of today. And now that I am home, I think I will sit and weep. And perhaps eat dinner since I wasn't able to eat anything.
And yes. I clocked overtime hours today because of people being horribly stupid.
Someone hold me? Please?
