Genericon happy
Jan. 29th, 2007 07:55 amWell, Genericon is over and it is time to start looking for an oral surgeon and go back to work. I will probably be calling a lot of places today, trying to find who will accept my insurance so I know where I can go to get these teeth removed. I also need my crowning looked at as I think that it doesn't seem to want to take very well.
Genericon was quite interesting. In fact, I think I enjoyed Genericon more this year than I have any other year even though there wer a few disappointments. But when I weighed pros against cons, well, this year was a blast. I was disappointed with, in no particular order:
The gaming room - you needed to leave jackets and bags at a designated area, which wasn't a big deal, but then to play ANYTHING you had to give your photo id into a counter and pick it up when you are finished. That isn't exactly something I was interested in doing, so I only walked in there once.
Anime - Usually they have at least something horribly obscure showing. This year, this was not the case. Many people complained that they already saw all these animes and that they were only showing the first 6 episodes of anything.
Great Hall - I felt there was a lack of games in the great hall and Magic tourney's took up near half the space this year. There weren't as many people just sitting on floors as well as all over the place trying to game because I think it just ended up being not as many people were interested in it since the games were the usual ones and people wanted something a little different. But I think Apples to Apples won for most played/enjoyed game of the con. Not for me, but for the huge groups that played it.
Ice House - Every year I've been, they have grossly huge IceHouse pieces. I did not see these this year, which meant no huge game of Ice Towers or Volcano which was a mildly more disappointing thing than some of my other disappointments.
Panels - I really saw nothing of exciting interest going on this year that I wanted to go to or be a part of.
Art show - Too far away from the main stream this year. Really obscure area so not many people stopped in for the art. My things went unpurchased.
LARP - It was all Living Greyhawk and so I wasn't interested.
Well, so much for the mild disappointments. There were a lot of things that made this con highly worth while as well.
Working - I volunteered this year for Saturday's graveyard shift (working 1am-5am). I think doing that got me in the con spirit as it had me on lack of sleep pretty quick and early in. I also got fairly well known at Ops from doing it so I made a lot of friends quickly and they were all very great for conversation.
People - So many people that remember me from past years or are just friends of mine in general! We had great conversations and ended up belting out some awesome music at the wee hours of the morning since I needed to stay awake anyway. But I felt I really enjoyed people's company a lot more this year than past years. Pehaps it was because I didn't have crash space so I didn't feel the urge to return anywhere in particular for food or sleep. I just stayed at the con living off caffeine and sugar. I met a various amount of people and I have never been more pleased by it all.
Gold Thief - One of my new favorite games. I purchased it from the dealers room on a whim and asked Kevin if he wanted to play it. We were looking over the instructions and had about two other people mosey over in interest of playing. So we all sat down and played the game. In fact, through out the con, I had to have played it around 10-15 times. It is such an elegantly simple little game that is just twisted enough. Everyone that played it with me loved it so much that they went out and bought their own copy. Thrillingly awesome, if you ask me.
That is as much as an update as I can do right now. There might be more later.
And WTF?! My mom sent me a card filled with temporary tattoos. They are all....potatoes dressed up as pirates. No features on the potato other than a bandana and eye patch. I'll have to put one on and take a picture. Haha.
Now it is off to work.
